Commentary
And when the decree was: So they obeyed his command and gathered them, it indicated the closeness of their gathering by the 'fa' in His saying: ﴿So when the magicians came﴾ meaning: everyone in the land of Egypt among them. ﴿Moses said to them﴾ removing this ambiguity: ﴿Throw﴾ all that ﴿you are going to throw﴾ meaning: firmly established in the act of throwing it, indicating that what they brought is not worthy of being thrown to Him. ﴿So when they threw﴾ meaning: the throwing occurred from them with their ropes and staffs, [following their statements] and they enchanted with their magic the eyes of the people, which shook their minds. ﴿Moses said﴾ denying them: ﴿What you have brought﴾ then he clarified that he did not inquire about it out of ignorance but rather out of contempt and denial. He elaborated on both matters with his saying: ﴿The magic﴾ because it is also an inquiry whether the hamzah is cut and elongated as in the reading of Abu Amr and Abu Ja'far, or it is made a hamzah of connection as in the reading of the others. For the hamzah of inquiry is implied, and the definiteness is either for the covenant or for the reality, and the latter is closer. It is permissible in the reading of the congregation that it could be a statement for what is intended by it to be exclusive, meaning it is the magic, not what you attributed to me. Then he began to clarify what he belittled by saying: ﴿Indeed, Allah﴾ meaning: the One who has complete knowledge and power ﴿will invalidate it﴾ meaning: soon by a promise that there is no changing of it. Then he justified that by what he clarified that it is corruption, saying: ﴿Indeed, Allah﴾ meaning: the One who has all perfection ﴿does not set right﴾ meaning: at any time of the times ﴿the work of the corruptors﴾ meaning: those deeply entrenched in corruption; by not benefiting from their work nor maintaining it. Then he added to it the clarification of the rectification of the work of the reformers by saying: ﴿And Allah establishes﴾ meaning: He affirms with a great affirmation ﴿the truth﴾ meaning: the thing that has stability as an essential attribute. And when he was in the position of belittling them, it indicated that by repeating the greatest comprehensive name. He referred to what He has of the highest attributes by His saying: ﴿With His words﴾ meaning: the eternal words that have the stability of the greatest. And he increased in greatness by saying: ﴿Even if the criminals dislike it﴾ meaning: those deeply entrenched in severing what Allah has commanded to be joined. So it was as he said, blessings and peace be upon him: Their magic has been nullified, their plotting has diminished, and the truth has been established - as clarified in Surah Al-A'raf.
