And when the verse indicated the end of the world by stating that the event has no permanence, and the decisive evidence for resurrection was established, it was appropriate to follow it with a reproach of those who are assured of it. This is in a context that clarifies that the reason for tranquility is the denial of tranquility, whether in belief or condition. And when the conclusion of that was: ﴿They fear﴾ [Yunus: 6], it became clear that there are those who fear and those who do not fear. And since the deluded are the majority, he began with them to deter them from their condition, because averting evils is preferable to attracting benefits. So he said, confirming due to their denial: ﴿Indeed, those who﴾. And since fear and hope are the essence of happiness, and hope is closer to encouraging towards engagement, he stated explicitly with hope while alluding to fear: ﴿They do not hope for Our meeting﴾ with resurrection after death, nor do they fear what We have of greatness. ﴿And they are content﴾, meaning as a compensation for the Hereafter, ﴿with the worldly life﴾ [that is], so they worked for it as if they were permanent in it, along with what it contains of indications of its insignificance. ﴿And they are assured﴾ of it, along with contentment ﴿with it﴾, a tranquility of one who is not disturbed from it, despite what they witness of its swift disappearance. ﴿And those who﴾, meaning specifically ﴿are heedless of Our signs﴾, meaning regarding what it has of greatness, not regarding other transient worldly conditions. ﴿They are heedless﴾, meaning immersed in heedlessness.
And His saying, exalted is He, contains a resumption: ﴿Those are﴾, meaning the distant and despised, ﴿their abode is the Fire because﴾, meaning due to what ﴿they used to﴾, meaning: by nature and disposition, ﴿earn﴾. For indeed, all their earnings are misguidance - that He does not hasten them with punishment for delaying repentance. And the meeting of what only Allah can bring about is made equivalent to meeting Allah, to magnify its importance, just as the coming of the great signs of Allah is made in His saying: ﴿Except that Allah comes to them in canopies of clouds﴾ [Al-Baqarah: 210] and similar. And tranquility is: leaning towards something with certainty in it. So these have established conditions for the world, and thus their joy and anger are for it; and heedlessness is: the absence of meaning from the heart due to what opposes its presence, and wakefulness is its opposite.
