Commentary

And when his words did not turn them away from their misguidance, it caused his saying to inform of their persistence: "So they denied him." That is, nothing of these clear proofs and decisive signs increased them except in turning away. And they were at the end of the period upon what they had been upon of denial. "So We saved him," that is, a great salvation by that which We have of magnificent greatness due to his obedience to Our commands and his sincere reliance upon Us. "And those with him," that is, from the wise and others, "in the ark," as We promised Our allies, and We made that a sign for the worlds. "And We made them," that is, despite their weakness, by that which We have of greatness, "successors," that is, in the earth after those whom We drowned. So whoever acts in obedience like them is deserving that We reward him as We rewarded them. "And We drowned," that is, by that which We have of complete might, "those who denied," that is, taking lightly and disregarding, "Our signs," as We warned those who fabricate lies against Allah.

And when this was a magnificent matter by which one with insight could take admonition, it caused a matter of the highest creation to understand by its observation, indicating that no one else is to be considered with the true consideration. So he said: "So look," and indicated that he is worthy to be inquired about with the tool of questioning. And he increased the matter in greatness by mentioning the universe, saying: "How was the end," [that is, the state that was as if it were a nature] "of the warned," [that is, the ones who were drowned in this description and they are those whom the messengers warned, so they were not worthy of good tidings because they did not believe] so that we may know that those whom We warn likewise, the descent of a sign or clarification of proof does not benefit those whom We intend their misery among them; and reliance: is the deliberate act of entrusting the matter to the one who manages it for the decree in His management; and distress: is the constriction of the matter that necessitates sadness; and turning away: is the departure from the matter; and reward: is the benefit that is deserved by the action; and Islam: is the submission to the command of Allah by obeying Him, as it is the best that the servants can acquire.
