Commentary

And when it has been established that He, glorified and exalted is He, encompasses all knowledge, and it is known - from the state of affairs - what cannot be contained and who cannot be contained merely by their names on earth in a clear Book, that is, whatever is revealed from it is found without concealment and without the need for investigation - that He is complete in ability. After it has been established that they are two groups: one is truthful in his matter, and the other is slanderous against him. And that He is gracious to the people by not hastening or delaying until the Day of Resurrection. He warned the slanderer of the consequences of his matter, both immediately and later. And He gave hope to the obedient. It was appropriate to say: I wish I knew what the details of the condition of the two groups would be in both abodes with certainty. It was answered that the allies are victorious and the enemies are doomed. So let every obedient one roll up his sleeves and exert his utmost effort to join the sincere and avoid the side of the slanderers by His saying, glorified and exalted is He, affirming their belief that they will destroy the party of Allah, and their denial is the utmost denial that they will miss: 'Indeed, the allies of Allah' that is, those who are devoted to obedience, there is nothing more precious than Him or greater than Him. 'There is no fear' that is, a stable high 'upon them' that is, from anything that will confront them 'nor will they' that is, in their hearts 'grieve' that is, a renewed sadness for what is lost; because their hearts are attached to Allah, glorified and exalted is He, so fear does not affect them, nor does sadness have an effect that tears their hearts as it does for others. And He explained them by saying: 'Those who have believed' that is, they have established this description that corrects deeds, and by it is the completeness of scientific strength. 'And they were' that is, a state that has become their nature and character 'those who are conscious' that is, they establish piety, which is the completeness of practical strength in faith and deeds, and they renew it. For indeed, no one can truly estimate Allah as He deserves. And the answer concluded with His saying: 'Indeed, those who fabricate lies against Allah' [Yunus: 69] - the verse. And this which Allah explained concerning the allies has no addition to its goodness. And from Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, 'They are a people with pale faces from staying up late, blind-eyed from weeping, and emaciated bellies from hunger.' And it was said: The ally is one who does not show off or act hypocritically, and how few are the friends who have this character. It has been authentically reported from the two Imams: Abu Hanifah and Al-Shafi'i, as mentioned by Sheikh Muhyi al-Din al-Nawawi in the introduction to the explanation of Al-Muhadhdhab and Al-Tibyan that each of them said: If the scholars are not the allies of Allah, then there is no ally for Allah. And this is in the scholar who acts upon his knowledge, as clarified in His saying in Surah Al-Zumar: 'Say, are those who know equal to those who do not know?' [Al-Zumar: 9]
