Commentary
And when this was established, he urged them towards it, being distant from magic due to its instability and the lack of ability to shake it, let alone remove it. He also mentioned that it is a healing, a reminder, guidance, and mercy. It encompasses all levels of divine proximity. He discouraged them from what they were approaching of the worldly debris due to its participation with magic in the rapid transformation and change leading to destruction and decline. It is [worthy] of being renounced and turned away from. So Allah, the Most High, said: ﴿Say, 'In the bounty of Allah'﴾. And it is good that all goodness follows this for His saying: ﴿He gives life and causes death﴾ [Yunus: 56] due to what was mentioned of the rapid departure from it. The Qur'an is a reviver of the dead of ignorance. Whoever turns to it benefits from knowledge and wisdom, so it is to the heart like life is to the body. Whoever turns away from it falls into misguidance and confusion, leading to eternal destruction. Thus, his turning away from it is a cause of his death. Abu Hayyan made the preposition 'bi' in 'bi-fadl' understood as omitted, its meaning being: ﴿Say﴾ that they may rejoice ﴿in the bounty of Allah﴾, meaning the Most High King ﴿and in His mercy﴾. Then he added the restriction of joy to that: ﴿So let them rejoice﴾, meaning this great matter alone if they ever rejoice in anything. ﴿So let them rejoice﴾ are two sentences. He said: Indeed, this is clearer, and the benefit of the second is the restriction of joy to that without what they are pleased with from worldly debris. For spiritual happiness is better than bodily happiness. Then he clarified the reason for joy, saying: ﴿He﴾, meaning what is being discussed regarding bounty and mercy, ﴿is better than what they gather﴾, meaning: from the debris of this world, even if it is the most honorable of what is in it from the goods that they constantly pursue over the passage of time. The wise person chooses the best for his toil; and bounty is the increase in blessings; and joy is the pleasure in the heart from attaining what is desired.
