Commentary
And when it was established that all of this is a clear truth distinct from the magic which is based on illusion, He turned to those who were previously mentioned at the beginning of the surah in His saying: "Was it a wonder for the people that they said it is magic?" He said: "O people" meaning those who said: "Indeed, our promise and the news of it is magic"; and when there exists between the souls and bodies an innate love due to attachment, and the soul is drawn to the desires of this worldly life by what it has imprinted in it through the manifestations of the senses, the light of reason does not come to it until the deficiencies return with the strength of attachment. Thus, vile morals occurred to it, which are spiritual diseases. So, its Lord, who created it, managed it, and was gracious to it, sent a skilled physician, who is the Messenger, blessings and peace be upon him, for the treatment of these diseases. And He revealed His glorious Book to describe the remedies. The most prudent of medicine is to prevent the patient from the causes of illness. He, exalted is He, said: "Indeed, a reminder has come to you" meaning a great admonition against abandoning everything that distracts the heart from Allah, from prohibitions and other things that are not appropriate, and that is the Shari'ah.
And when the consumption of harmful things is of great danger, and it is delightful to the soul due to the compatibility of deficiency between them, and refraining from it is the most difficult thing for it, He encouraged it to accept by saying: "From your Lord" meaning the One who is gracious to you, the Manager of your interests with this Qur'an; and when the most appropriate action after abstinence is to take the remedy that removes the corrupt humors from within, He said: "And a healing" meaning a very great healing "for what is in the breasts" from the diseases of ignorance. And that healing is achieved by purifying the inner self after abandoning vile morals by adorning oneself with praiseworthy attributes so that the inner self becomes safe from corrupt beliefs and deficient morals just as the body is safe from vile actions. This is the path.
And when the soul, if its mirror is polished, becomes receptive to the manifestation of lights upon it by the overflow of divine flashes, sacred inspirations, and royal gifts, because it is constantly shining, as he, blessings and peace be upon him, said in what al-Tabarani narrated from Muhammad ibn Salamah, may Allah be pleased with him: "Indeed, your Lord has in the days of your time breezes, so expose yourselves to them." The hadith. And nothing prevents them from descending into every heart except the lack of receptivity from some of them due to the accumulation of darkness within it from the rust of opposition, the religion of avoidance, and heedlessness, so it becomes like a rusty mirror that does not accept the impression of images upon it. He, exalted is He, said: "And guidance" to the truth because it is a great light that leads its possessor - and it must - to the straightest path, and this is for the righteous, and it is the truth.
And when this light increases in greatness and its radiance spreads, it overflows - after reaching these spiritual degrees and divine ascensions - upon the souls of the deficient, like the overflow of light from the essence of the sun upon the bodies of the world. It illuminates every receptive one who turns towards it. Allah, the Most High, said: ﴿And mercy﴾, meaning: a great honor in the imamate that reaches perfection and radiance to a limit beyond which there is no more. This is for the prophets, peace be upon them. And since no one benefits from their lights except those who turn towards them, then the benefit from them varies according to the varying degrees of turning towards them and approaching them. He said: ﴿For the believers﴾, those who followed him and are firmly established in turning towards the guides and submitting to them. This was the reason for their salvation. The Imam pointed to this and said: These are rational degrees and evidential ranks indicated by these four Qur'anic words in a way that nothing from them can be delayed from its place nor advanced. This is contrary to what they attributed to him, blessings and peace be upon him, of magic, for it is a disease that is entirely and a misguidance that leads to misery. The admonition is a clarification that calls to righteousness by way of desire and fear, and the preaching is what calls to humility and worship and diverts from sin and wrongdoing. And the healing is the removal of disease, and the disease of ignorance is more harmful than the disease of the body, and its treatment is more difficult and its doctors are fewer, and the healing from it is greater. And the chest is the place of the heart, and it is the most honorable place in the living being due to the nobility of the heart. And guidance is a clarification of a meaning that leads to the truth, and it is a sign that leads to knowledge. And mercy is a blessing upon the needy.
