Commentary
And when the threat and the clear warning contained in the verse had passed, Allah, the Most High, informed that they had turned to what is worthy of the listener of that, from abandoning that stubbornness to the principles of submission, by His saying: ﴿And they ask you﴾, in addition to His saying: 'And they say, when is this promise?' That is, they seek from you the news, which is the great informing about the reality of this tremendous promise. It is possible that this is from them in a manner of mockery, like the first, so the astonishment and reproach in it after the evidence that has passed is greater. ﴿Is it true?﴾ That is, is this which you threaten us with established, or is it like magic with no reality to it, as they previously said. ﴿Say﴾, that is, in response to them, ﴿Indeed, by my Lord﴾, that is, the One who is gracious to me, the One who manages my affairs, and the One who affirms all that I bring. And when they were deniers, He emphasized His saying: ﴿Indeed, it is the truth﴾, that is, it is a reality that is established and must come down upon you.
And when a thing may be true, and a person is able to avert it, so it does not frighten him, He said negating that: ﴿And you are not﴾, that is, to whom He has threatened you, ﴿able to frustrate﴾ in what is intended for you.
