Commentary
And when he presented in this surah their saying: "If only a sign were sent down to him from his Lord" [Yunus: 20], and he came in it with a response to them and an admonition for them from the profound signs in wisdom that truly surpass the powers of humans and diminish before it the abilities of creation. The last of that was the indication that their partners do not guide except if the Guide guides them, as a favor, not that they are guided. And the establishment of proof that their doctrines are not based on knowledge but rather follow desires. He followed that with a decisive proof regarding the Qur'an, that it is not correct at all to bring it without His command, glorified and exalted is He, in response to their saying: "Indeed, it is fabricated," because it is from the valley of what has been concluded with these verses from their following of assumptions, for they have no support in that, nor is there any doubt at all. Rather, it is merely a desire, and most of them are knowledgeable of the truth in this matter. So he negated that with what removes the assumptions and demolishes the opponents, leaving no doubt for the deceived. And he established that it is [the great sign] and the truth worthy of following because it is guidance. So He, the Exalted, said: "And it was not" as a conjunction to His saying: "It is not for me to change it" [Yunus: 15] to the end of it. So at that time, it is the saying of the saying, meaning: Say to them that speech and say to them "It was not" meaning: never in any way. And He specified it with a specification that cannot be confused, saying: "This Qur'an" meaning: the one that encompasses all good with the delivery of styles of miraculous wisdom to all creation, "that it be fabricated" [meaning] that it occurs at any time from the times [the deliberate attribution of falsehood to Allah] by anyone from creation, whoever they may be. And it was known by the diminishment of their ranks before the lofty rank of Him, glorified is He, by His saying: "besides Allah" meaning: the one who has been established to manage all matters. So there is no intercessor except after His permission, and nothing escapes Him. So glorified is the Bestower upon His servants by clarifying the arguments and removing doubts and calling to the path of guidance while He is free of need of them and has power over them. And fabrication is: the reporting with certainty of falsehood, for it is from the cutting of the leather; and it is its cutting after its being torn apart.
And when the coming of the unlettered one - who has not sat with a scholar - with the news and past stories in detail is a decisive proof of the truth of the one who claims that he has no teacher except Allah, he expressed it with a tool of obstinacy, saying: "But" meaning: it was a state that cannot be other than it, "a confirmation of that which" meaning: preceded "before him" meaning: before him from the books. And the proof of its truthfulness is the witness of existence, while the people were in utmost enmity towards him, and the people of the two books were among them in the Arabian Peninsula, very close to them, while they were able to inquire about everything he brought. So if they had found a flaw, they would have criticized him with it. Thus, the absence of their criticism indicated the truthfulness decisively.
And when that was a dominating authority over his truth, blessings and peace be upon him, it increased his appearance by what the book brought to him of the detail which is the end of knowledge. He said: ﴿And the detail of the book﴾, meaning the comprehensive collection in which are the wisdoms and rulings and the essentials of speech from all the heavenly books in clarifying their generalities and explaining their ambiguities. It is looking at his saying: ﴿Is he who guides to the truth﴾ [Yunus: 35] the verse. It is a proof that he is the only guide, so he is worthy of following and the detail is in clarifying the distinction between the ambiguous meanings until every meaning appears in its truth. Its counterpart is division, and its contradiction is mixing and confusion. The explanation of its detail is that it came from the scientific knowledge of belief in the knowledge of the essence and attributes with their divisions, and the practical obligations related to the apparent, which is the science of jurisprudence, and the science of the hidden, and the training of souls with what there is no addition to it and no book can rival it in it, and the science of ethics is abundant in the Qur'an like (p-122) ﴿Take what is given freely﴾ [Al-A'raf: 199] - the verse.
﴿Indeed, Allah commands justice﴾ [An-Nahl: 90] - the verse and similar to them.
And when it was - along with the testimony of truth by confirming what is established as a reality - miraculous in the collection and detail of all the noble sciences: both rational and transmitted, a miracle that has not been established for others, it is proven that it contradicts fabrication while being ﴿There is no doubt in it﴾ and that it is ﴿from the Lord of the worlds﴾, meaning their creator and the one who manages their affairs and the one who is gracious to them, because - along with the collection of all that - there is no disagreement in it in any way, and that is beyond the capacity of mankind.
