Commentary
And when he informed them of their acknowledgment of some of what they ask about, then he followed it up with what he hinted at regarding their denial or their silence about some of it that relates to their partners, he turned to what they explicitly stated in their saying ﴿So they will say﴾ [Yunus: 31] and what he hinted at from "So they will deny" or "So they will remain silent" his saying: ﴿And what follows﴾ meaning: with utmost effort ﴿Most of them﴾ meaning: in their utterance or silence in their worship of the idols and their saying: indeed, they are intercessors, and other than that (p-119) ﴿Except a supposition﴾ indicating that they are merely imitators and followers of whims.
And when the supposition is not denied in its use in the laws, he pointed out that its place is only where there is no text on the intended matter, so it is then compared to the texts by its method. However, if the decisive evidence exists in a ruling, then it is not permissible to deviate from it in any way. So Allah, the Exalted, said in response to those who say: Is not supposition used in many rulings?: ﴿Indeed, supposition does not avail﴾ meaning: at all ﴿from the truth﴾ meaning: the complete one ﴿anything﴾ meaning: in place of it, and it can only be in place of the truth unless its follower contradicts it with a decisive evidence that he acts upon.
And when the distinction became necessary, he issued a threat to the one who persists in his delusion in response to "Who" as if he said: Indeed, that is not hidden from them, but they are arrogant so they do not return. So he said: ﴿Indeed, Allah﴾ meaning: the All-Encompassing of everything ﴿is Knowing﴾ meaning: of profound knowledge ﴿of what they do﴾ so be patient, for they will surely act.
