Commentary
And when He, glorified and exalted is He, established that their partners are created beings, subdued, having no power except for what Allah has decreed for them, and that He alone is the true Lord, their disgrace became evident. He followed this with a mention of the evidence for the corruption of their doctrine. He rebuked them by stating that the essence of the question directed to them is about what they acknowledge as being exclusively His, which certainly indicates His uniqueness in all matters without pause for the belief in His exclusivity in divinity. He said: "Say" [O the most honorable of our creation and the most compassionate towards the servants], "Who provides for you" [meaning brings you goodness], O you who deny the resurrection and claim partnership, "from the heaven" [meaning] with rain and other benefits, "and the earth" with vegetation and other means for you to live. "Or who owns hearing" [meaning] that by which you hear the signs, and He is singled out for equality in it generally, "and sight" [meaning] by which you see what He has bestowed upon you in its creation, then preserved it over long periods despite numerous calamities, so He bestows it upon you to complete your physical life with the preservation of the soul, and your spiritual life with the existence of knowledge. It has been narrated from Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, that he said: "Glorified is He who has made the fat perceive, and the bone hear, and the flesh speak."
So when He asked them about the clearest thing they are in and the closest to them, He alerted them to what preceded it from the beginning of creation and said: "And who brings the living" from animals and plants, "from the dead" meaning: from the sperm and similar things, "and brings the dead" meaning: [from] the sperm and similar things that do not grow, "from the living" [meaning so it is transferred from deficiency to perfection]; then He generalized and said: "And who manages the affair" [meaning]: all of it with comprehensive management.
And when they were acknowledging provision and what accompanies it from creation and management, He informed about their answer when they are asked about it by saying: "So they will say: Allah" [meaning the name of this name which has all perfection with life and sustenance, unlike what will come from resurrection and guidance]. "So say" [meaning: let it be caused by that, that we say to you: Say to them, causing this denial against them for their lack of piety]: "Do you not fear?" [meaning: do you not place a barrier between yourselves and His punishment for your acknowledgment of His uniqueness in His lordship and your associating others with Him in His divinity?]
