And when He, glorified and exalted is He, clarified the fate of the two groups, He alerted to some of the preliminaries that prevent anyone from interceding without His permission by His saying: "And on the Day" meaning: and We distinguished between them because there are no kinships there and no reasons, so there will be no support on the Day "We gather them" meaning the two groups: the saved and the doomed, the worshippers among them and the worshipped, while they are "all together". Then it will be cut off what is between the polytheists and their partners, so nothing from what they believe in as intercession will benefit them, nor will anything useful benefit them. Rather, they will show enmity and confront with hostility, and He is referring to His saying, the Most High: "Indeed, He begins creation, then He returns it" [Yunus: 4] and to His saying: "And they worship besides Allah what does not harm them nor benefit them" [Yunus: 18]. And the gathering is the collection with reluctance from every side to a single position; and He, glorified and exalted is He, indicated the length of their standing by His saying: "Then We will say to those who associated partners" meaning: with Us, who did not associate in their creation; and His saying: "Your place". Abu Hayyan reported from the grammarians that they made it a name to affirm, and he responded to Al-Zamakhshari's interpretation of it as "stand" because it is transitive, and it must be equal between the name and the named in transitivity and intransitivity, meaning: We will say to them: Stand in the standing of humiliation "You and your partners" until Our command is executed upon you, showing the weakness of their deities that they used to hope for and humiliating them, so they cannot oppose that.

And when the interpretation was: So they stood in compliance with the command according to the will, He added to it the cause of His saying: "So We removed" meaning: We removed a great deal of what was "between them" in the world of connection and affection until it became enmity and aversion. So the disbelievers said: Our Lord, these are the ones who led us astray, and we used to call upon You besides them. "And their partners said to them" distancing themselves from them by what He, glorified and exalted is He, created for them of speech: "What were you" meaning: O polytheists, and the partners were attributed to them because they are the ones who appointed them without command or evidence, and because they made for them a share of their wealth. "You worship us" meaning: you single us out for worship because we do not deserve that, indicating that no one is worshipped except the one who deserves sincerity in that by being worshipped alone without a partner. And whoever does not deserve that does not deserve absolute worship and is not suitable for it. And any worship that involves partnership is not considered valid at all, and no inanimate object would accept it if it could speak. So when the conditioned is negated by sincerity, the absolute is negated; because there is no regard for it at all. And it is known that what has this characteristic is not preferred over anyone, so we think that no worshipper has worshipped us, let alone that he singles us out for that. And a person is allowed to deny what he thinks he can deny, and we have not known anything of that.
