Tafsir for verse: 10:23
23But when He delivers them, they at once start rebelling on the earth wrongfully. O people, your rebellion is, in fact, against your own selves. It is only worldly life that you are enjoying. Thereafter, it is to Us that you have to return; then We will tell you what you have been doing.

Commentary

And when He, glorified and exalted is He, made it known that they confirmed this promise with this confirmation, He followed it with a statement that they hastened in breaking it with utmost haste, so He said: ﴿So when He saved them﴾. And when the letter 'fa' indicated the hastiness in breaking, He confirmed their supplication for that with His saying: ﴿Then they seek﴾, meaning: they exceed the limits ﴿in the land﴾, meaning: its kind ﴿without right﴾, meaning: the complete right. The transgressor remains blameworthy until he is upon the complete right, which has no falsehood in it whatsoever. The address initially came in: ﴿He will guide you﴾ [Yunus: 22] to encompass the believers, for guidance is suitable for gratitude. Then He turned to the absence at the emergence of what is not befitting for them - Abu Hayyan pointed this out, and it is better to say that He, glorified and exalted is He, approached them with a reminder that He made them - by what He prepared in them of strengths - worthy of His address, then He turned away from them as a sign that they deserved to be turned away due to their neglect, being deceived by what He granted them of the good wind in a place where they should have turned to Him and been independent of everything else due to the magnitude of the danger and the severity of the matter. It is as if He is mentioning to others of their condition what He finds admirable in it to denounce them and their state is ugly. And guidance is: the movement in a direction that extends like walking; and the land is: the vast earth that is cut from a country, and from it is the land for its vastness of good; and the sea is: the vast water that its edges cannot be seen from its middle; and the ship is: the vessels that move in the water, and its origin is movement, from it is the spindle's rotation, and the orbit in which the stars revolve; and salvation is: the rescue from destruction; and transgression is: the intent to rise through oppression, and its origin is seeking; and the right is: placing something in its proper place as the intellect calls for it. Then He clarified that what they are in of respite is merely the provision of this world and that it is a house of transience, so He said, the Exalted: ﴿O mankind﴾, meaning: those who are dominated by the description of turmoil ﴿Indeed, your transgression﴾, meaning: every transgression that occurs from you ﴿is against yourselves﴾, for the return of the consequence is upon it specifically, and it is based on the estimation of your benefit from it, which is a fleeting possession ﴿the provision of the worldly life﴾. Then its disgrace and shame will remain after death ﴿Then to Us﴾, meaning: specifically ﴿is your return﴾ after resurrection ﴿so We will inform you﴾ of what is due to Us of greatness, an immense informing ﴿of what you used to﴾, meaning: a being that is like a nature ﴿do﴾, and We will reward you for it.
