Commentary
Then He, glorified and exalted is He, took to clarify what is evident by which the rapidity of His cunning is shown in a clear example indicating what is in the previous verse of His, glorified and exalted is He, transferring His servants from hardship to blessing and from the rapidity of their turning. He said: ﴿He is﴾ meaning: no one other than Him ﴿the One who causes you to travel﴾ [meaning] in every time you travel in it with a great journey that you cannot detach yourselves from ﴿on land and sea﴾ meaning: He causes for you means that necessitate your traveling in both and He decrees for you that and guides you among all other creatures to what is in it of various benefits, along with His ability to strike you on land with sinking and with sinking and what is less than it, and in the sea with drowning and what is similar to it.
And since the calamity in the conditions of the sea is more apparent, while the traveling in it is one of the greatest signs and clearest evidences, He clarified it, turning away from mentioning land, and said: ﴿Until when you are﴾ meaning: a state from which you cannot escape ﴿in the ships﴾ meaning: the vessels, which can be singular or plural; and He turned away from them after the approach for what is to come, and said: ﴿And they sailed﴾ meaning: the ship; ﴿with them﴾ and when He mentioned its sailing while they were in it, He mentioned its cause and said: ﴿with a good wind﴾. Then He clarified to them their ignorance of the outcomes by saying: ﴿And they rejoiced in it﴾ meaning: with that wind and with the ship sailing by it ﴿a fierce wind came to them﴾ which disturbed their ships and caused them distress ﴿and the wave came to them﴾ meaning: known to everyone by sight or description ﴿from every place﴾ meaning: it is customary to come from it, so it shook their hearts ﴿and they thought that they﴾ and since the feared thing is destruction, not being from a specified source, it was built for the passive what is a metaphor for it, for when the enemy surrounds his enemy, he is certain of destruction. So He said: ﴿They were surrounded﴾.
And when what has preceded of their strange condition, which requires hearts and weakens powers, came to be, it necessitated that they be asked about what would occur from them at that time. The statement came in accordance with this question, informing about their abandoning of stubbornness and their sincerity, which indicates their distress at the severity of it and the weakening of their resolve in witnessing its blows. The expression of al-Rummani: the connection of the call of the answers, as if it were said: When they thought that they were surrounded, they called upon Allah, meaning the One who possesses the attributes of perfection, with a desire towards Him for salvation and worshiping Him with sincerity, being sincere to Him from all association. To Him belongs the religion, meaning the oneness and the affirmation both outwardly and inwardly. The verse has included the explanation of what the intellect necessitates of fear at times of hardship towards the Giver of safety and the Bestower of blessings in revealing that calamity. Then He followed that with a narration of their state in their promise of gratitude for salvation, then their lying in that while claiming that they are the purest of people, farthest from lying and the most averse to it, and the farthest of people from denying the favor. So Allah, the Exalted, said, narrating their saying, which they indicated by their emphasis that they said it with utmost desire, denying what is presumed of them regarding returning to what they were in before that condition of disbelief: 'If You save us, O King, who has no authority but You, from this calamity, we will surely be among the grateful.' Meaning: a state that we will not cease from, being among those who continuously express gratitude to You, firmly characterized by it.
