Commentary
Then He, the Most High, said, in reference to His saying: ﴿And they worship﴾ [Yunus: 18] ﴿And they say﴾ meaning: when the clear signs came to them, they said: 'Bring us a Quran other than this,' disbelieving in its Revealer, worshiping besides Him what no sane person would accept to be equal to [himself]. So how about worshiping Him [saying due to their extreme stubbornness and persistence in rebellion]: ﴿Why﴾ meaning: why not ﴿was a sign﴾ [meaning: in any way] ﴿sent down upon him from his Lord﴾ meaning: the Benefactor towards him, other than what has been brought to him; and this is either due to their request for a compelling sign that would force them to believe, or because they did not consider what was revealed to him as a count of signs, let alone being clear signs. And it is enough that the Quran alone is a lasting sign throughout time, unique among the signs, precise in its approach among the miracles, while they are unable to oppose it by alteration or otherwise. So what greater stubbornness is there than this?
And when there was a hint of questioning in that, He said [responding to their words]: ﴿Say﴾ restricting it in a true sense ﴿Indeed, the unseen﴾ meaning: that which 'Isa, peace be upon him, referred to in his saying: ﴿And I do not know what is in Yourself﴾ [Al-Ma'idah: 116], which no creature has ever known at all.
﴿Belongs to Allah﴾ meaning: the One who has complete knowledge alone; I have no knowledge of the reason for not sending down what you desire, and will you be answered to it or not.
And when He, glorified and exalted is He, specified Him with knowledge, and the sending down of signs is among the possible things, He caused His saying: ﴿So wait﴾. Then He answered as if someone were saying to Him: 'What will you do?' by saying: ﴿Indeed, I am with you﴾ meaning: in this matter, not opposing you in your desire for a sign that would lead you to guidance. Then He affirmed and emphasized the meaning by saying: ﴿Among those who are waiting﴾ meaning: for what will come to me from a sign and otherwise.
