Tafsir for verse: 10:18
18Beside Allah, they worship those who can neither harm nor benefit them, and they say, “These are our intercessors with Allah.” Say, “Are you informing Allah of what He does not know as existing in the heavens or on the earth?” Pure is He, and far higher than what they associate with Him.

Commentary

(p-91) And when the context was for warning and frightening, He presented the harm for that and to alert them that they are overwhelmed in His blessings, which no one else has the power to withhold anything of. Therefore, they must bind it with gratitude. He said: ﴿What does not harm them﴾ meaning: originally from the idols and others ﴿and does not benefit them﴾ in opposing the Qur'an by alteration or otherwise, nor in anything from the matters. And it is the right of the deity to be rewarding for obedience and punishing for disobedience; otherwise, His worship would be in vain. They turn away from what has come to them of clear signs from the One who knows that He harms them and benefits them, and no one possesses anything of that except Him. And He has established the evidence for that more than once. In this is the utmost reproach for them by contradicting reason along with their claim of firm footing in it and their ability to engage with it. Worship is: submission of the heart in the highest ranks of submission. Then He expressed amazement at them with another amazement and said: ﴿And they say﴾ meaning: it was not enough for them to say that once in a lifetime until they renew their saying, continuing on it: ﴿These﴾ meaning: the idols or others ﴿are our intercessors﴾ meaning: their intercession for us is established ﴿with Allah﴾ meaning: the Most Great King, from whom it is not possible to approach anything of His presence except by His permission. The invalidation of what this statement contains has already passed in His saying: ﴿There is no intercessor except after His permission﴾ [Yunus: 3]. And in it is their humiliation in their inability to alter the Qur'an or to bring anything like it, where their eloquence did not benefit them in that, nor did their rhetoric avail them anything. Their eloquent ones were lacking in its matter, and their intercessors went astray from them. This clearly indicates that there is no intercessor except by His permission. (p-92) After that, it was as if He said: How do I respond to them? He said: ﴿Say﴾ denying them this knowledge: ﴿Do you inform Allah﴾ meaning: do you inform with a great informing ﴿of what He does not know﴾ meaning: there is no knowledge of it for Him at any time? ﴿In the heavens﴾ and when the situation necessitated utmost clarification, He repeated the negation explicitly and said: ﴿and not in the earth﴾. And in that is a belittling of their minds from which they cannot refute in a way that would embarrass the inanimate. For what is not known to Allah does not exist at all. So there is no negation more eloquent than this, just as when you exaggerate in negating something from yourself, you say: This is something that Allah did not know from me. And when He clarified here what they are upon of the foolishness of minds and the weakness of opinions, He concluded that by glorifying Himself with His saying: ﴿Glorified is He﴾ meaning: He is free from every blemish of deficiency in a way that cannot be encompassed ﴿and exalted﴾ meaning: and He acted with what He has of encompassing attributes of perfection in a manner of one who is excessive in glorifying ﴿above what they associate﴾ meaning: they establish association with Him.
