Commentary
And when he forbade him from associating partners with Allah, he confirmed it with what is like an explanation for him regarding what he must avoid of foolishness in submitting to what has no harm in it nor benefit by His saying, "And do not invoke" [meaning] in any rank of the ranks that exist, "besides Allah," meaning the One in whose hand is everything. "What does not benefit you," meaning: if you do something of that, then Our punishment will come to you. "And it will not harm you," meaning: if you remain obedient to Us along with Our support. "So if you do," meaning: something of what We have forbidden you from. "Then you are indeed," if you invoke that other [because of that], "among the wrongdoers," meaning those who are entrenched in placing the invocation in other than its proper place, for what is like that is far removed from the status of divinity.
