And when the weaning has advanced from inclination for those who seek the signs, and their seeking for it is indeed based on doubt, and if it were not on that basis, then the action of the doubter is often predominant. Answers have been provided for them, and this was concluded with a threat to them and a glad tidings for the believers that necessitates their steadfastness. It is fitting that the matter is followed by another answer indicating his steadfastness, blessings and peace be upon him, and that he is manifesting his religion. He is pleased with whom He is pleased and is displeased with whom He is displeased, because the clarification has reached its goal in His saying, 'Say, O mankind,' meaning those who are in a state of turmoil. Their aspirations have not elevated them to the rank of steadfastness. 'If you are' meaning: a state that is like the nature of being immersed 'in doubt' that exists 'from' the perspective of 'religion,' seeking for its revelation - after the intellect has taken responsibility for its guidance - the sending down of the signs. So I am not in doubt about the correctness of my religion and the invalidity of your religion; present it to your minds and see what wisdom is in it, recalling what your religion has from the revelation that has been previously clarified in His saying, 'Say, have you considered what Allah has sent down to you of provision?' [Yunus: 59] and similar to it: 'So I do not worship' meaning now or in the future 'those whom you worship' meaning now or after now 'besides Allah' meaning the Greatest King due to their inability to do anything harmful. So do not hope that I will have doubt because of the existence of doubt for you. Therefore, I do not worship anyone other than Allah at all.
And when the negation of His worship of others is not explicit in affirming it for Him, He said: 'But I worship Allah' meaning the one who encompasses the attributes of perfection in continuous worship. Then He described Him with what necessitates caution [from Him] and indicates the perfection of His power: 'the One who takes you away' by seizing your souls, which nothing among you is equal to. So do not hope - when He intends to take them - for an attempt to direct a defense against that. And in this description - along with what is in it of intimidation - there is an indication of the evidence for creation and resurrection. It is as if it were said: the One who brought you into existence from non-existence, as you acknowledge your non-existence after this creation while you are humbled. Thus, it is established with certainty that He is capable of resurrecting you after this annihilation in the first way, so beware of Him to worship Him as I worship Him, for He has commanded me with that, and you know the consequences of the King when opposed. And He said: 'If you are in doubt,' even though they explicitly declare the invalidity of his religion, because they are in the state of the doubter due to their turmoil when the signs come, or because among them is the doubter, and it has predominated because it is closer to the state; and doubt is: a standing between the meaning and its opposite, and its opposite is belief; for it is a certainty of the correctness of the meaning without its opposite. And He expressed with 'from' indicating that their action began from the religion, and if He had expressed with 'in' to make it understood that they entered into it because they are in doubt, and doubt is in religion. And the circumstance is for the circumstance of the thing, and He left the conjunction indicating that every answer from it is sufficient on its own.
And when he established what is true by way of reason, he followed it with what has come from transmission, affirming and necessitating it by his saying: ﴿And I was commanded﴾ meaning: by a decisive command from one with whom no command belongs to anyone else. [And he magnified the commanded act by making it the foundation of the speech, establishing it in the position of the doer, and he said]: ﴿To be﴾ meaning: always being in a natural state. [And when the context was regarding what may contain doubt from the inner matter, he expressed it with faith, which is for the heart, saying]: ﴿Of the believers﴾ meaning: those firmly rooted in this description. ﴿And establish﴾ [meaning] O Messenger, ﴿your face﴾ meaning: your entirety towards the path of sincerity that has no mixture in it ﴿for the religion﴾. So he connected first the word 'to be' with the meaning of the command [meaning 'to be' without 'be'], and secondly with its wording [which is ﴿Establish﴾], combining both styles, and both have the meaning of the source. He specified the second with that for its length, as it is like a detail for the first, so the address in it is more emphatic and more pleasing. And his saying: ﴿Inclining﴾ is a state from the doer of 'establish', and its meaning is: being a Muslim, inclined with the evidence - as I clarified in Al-Baqarah, meaning: combine between faith in the heart and Islam with the limbs. ﴿And do not be﴾ meaning: at any time of the times ﴿of the polytheists﴾ who are contrary to the attribute of Islam, being harsh, rigid, cold, and hard-hearted.
