Commentary
And what was not suitable nor attainable for a single soul, what is above it, to believe, meaning that faith does not occur from it at any time, except by the permission of Allah, meaning by the will of the Most High King, to whom belongs creation and command and His enabling. He makes steadfastness and tranquility, which are necessary for faith, which is the farthest thing from magic, upon those who benefit from their intellects, so they adhere to the high morals that are the fruits of faith. And He makes the impurity, meaning the disturbance and instability that is necessitated by denial, which is most similar to magic, because it is an illusion of what has no reality, and the filth, and the ugliness, and the anger, and the punishment that arises from it. And when what is in this surah from the signs has reached a level of clarity that does not require anything other than mere intellect, He said: 'Upon those who do not understand,' meaning they have no intellect, and for that reason they do not benefit from the signs, while they claim to be the most intelligent of people, and they fall into the vices of morals while claiming to be the farthest from them. So let not your soul be consumed with regret for them; and the soul is the essence of the thing, which if what is besides it were to cease, that thing would not cease. His soul and his essence are one.
