Commentary
So do not overpower him, nor take his wealth and rights because of his weakness. And in the reading of Ibn Mas'ud: do not scowl, which means to frown at him. And such a person is described as having a scowling face. From this is the hadith: "By my father and my mother, he did not scowl at me." [[Related by Muslim from the hadith of Muawiyah ibn al-Hakam al-Sulami in the midst of a longer narration.]]
The river, and the reprimand: is the scolding. About the Prophet ﷺ [[Related by al-Daraqutni in al-Afraad from the narration of al-Walid ibn al-Fadl from Abdullah ibn Abi Hussein from Ibn Jurayj from Ata from Ibn Abbas, but he said, 'You should scold him - instead - and reprimand him.' Al-Walid was accused of fabrication by Ibn Hibban, but Talhah ibn Amr supported him from Ata, which was related by al-Thalabi through the route of Uqbah ibn Mujalid from Habban ibn Ali from Talhah, and this chain is weak.]]
And Ibn Mardawayh related from the narration of Ahmad ibn Abi Tayyib from Hayan, who said: from Abu Hurairah - instead of Ibn Abbas. There is another route. It was narrated by Abdul Ghani ibn Said in Iydah al-Ishkal from the narration of Wahb ibn Zam'ah from Hisham ibn Wahb Abu al-Bakhtari the judge. He is a liar.]] "If you have turned away the questioner three times and he does not return, then there is no harm in scolding him." [[The phrase 'there is no harm in scolding him' means to reprimand and prevent him. This was clarified in al-Sihah. (A)]] And it was said: Indeed, he is not the questioner seeking charity, but rather a seeker of knowledge: when he comes, do not scold him. Reporting the blessings of Allah: is to thank Him and spread it. He means: what he mentioned of the blessing of shelter, guidance, and enrichment, and what is besides that. And from Mujahid: by the Quran, so report: read it, and convey what you have been sent with.
And from Abdullah ibn Ghalib that he used to say when he woke up: Allah provided me with goodness last night: I read such and such and prayed such and such. If he was told: O Abu Firas, someone like you says such a thing? He would say: Allah the Exalted said, 'And as for the blessing of your Lord, report it.' And you say: do not report the blessings of Allah. This is only permissible if it is intended for kindness, and that others may follow his example, and he is safe from temptation. Concealment is better. Even if it only involves resembling the people of ostentation and reputation: it is enough. And in the reading of Ali, may Allah be pleased with him: 'So report.' The meaning is: you were an orphan, and lost, and in need, so Allah sheltered you, guided you, and enriched you. So whatever happens and however it appears, do not forget the blessing of Allah upon you in these three. And emulate Allah, so be kind to the orphan and shelter him, for you have experienced orphanhood, and you have seen how Allah dealt with you. And have mercy on the questioner and check on him with your kindness, and do not scold him away from your door, just as your Lord had mercy on you and enriched you after poverty. And report all the blessings of Allah, which includes His guidance from misguidance, and teaching you the laws and the Quran, emulating Allah in that He guided you from misguidance.
From the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: "Whoever recites Surah Al-Duha, Allah will make him among those whom Muhammad is pleased to intercede for him, and ten good deeds will be written for him equal to the number of every orphan and questioner." [[Related by al-Thalabi, al-Wahidi, and Ibn Mardawayh with the chain to Abu ibn Ka'b.]]
