And he became self-sufficient and renounced what is with Allah as if he were self-sufficient from it, so he did not fear Him. Or he became self-sufficient with the desires of this world from the bliss of Paradise, because it is in contrast to 'and he feared.' So We will make it easy for him to hardship. So We will forsake him and prevent him from the graces, until obedience becomes the hardest thing for him and the most severe, from His saying 'He makes his chest tight and constricted as if he were ascending in the sky.' Or He named the path of goodness as the easy one, because its outcome is ease, and the path of evil as the hard one, because its outcome is hardship. Or He meant by them the two paths of Paradise and Hell, meaning: We will guide them in the Hereafter to the two paths. It is said: This was revealed about Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, and about Abu Sufyan ibn Harb. 'And what will avail him?' is an interrogative in the meaning of denial, or negation. 'He falls' is derived from 'the fall' which is destruction, meaning: death. Or he falls into the pit if he is buried. Or he falls into the depths of Hell.
