Commentary
Makkah, and its verses are 21. "It was revealed after Al-A'la." 'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.'
Al-Maghshi: It is either the sun from His saying, "And the night when it covers it," or the day from His saying, "He covers the night with the day," or everything that is concealed by its darkness from His saying, "When it becomes dark." It becomes clear with the removal of the darkness of the night.
Or it becomes evident and is uncovered with the rising of the sun. "And what He created" refers to the great and powerful one who has the ability to create male and female from one water. And before: they are Adam, blessings and peace be upon him, and Hawwa (Eve). And in the recitation of the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him: "the male and the female." Ibn Mas'ud read: "And He who created the male and the female."
And according to Al-Kisai: "And what He created the male and the female" is in the genitive case as a substitute for the position of "what He created," meaning: "And the creation of Allah, the male and the female." It is permissible to omit the name of Allah because it is known that He alone is the creator. There is no creator besides Him. And it is said that Allah did not create any creation of the beings with souls that is neither male nor female. The khuntha (hermaphrodite), even if its matter is unclear to us, is not unclear to Allah; it is known as either male or female. So if he swore by divorce that he did not encounter a male or a female that day, and indeed he encountered a khuntha who is ambiguous, he would be guilty, because in reality it is either male or female, even if it is ambiguous to us.
Al-Shatta means various, meaning: your endeavors are various and different, and the explanation of their differences is what follows as a result.
