Commentary
To please you about them, meaning their aim in swearing by Allah is to seek your approval so that it may benefit them in their worldly affairs. If you are pleased with them, then your approval alone does not benefit them if Allah is angry with them and they are subject to His immediate and delayed punishment. It was said that this was mentioned so that no one would mistakenly think that the approval of the believers necessitates Allah's approval of them. It was said: They are Jad ibn Qais, Mu'tab ibn Qushayr, and their companions, who were eighty hypocrites. The Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, said when he arrived in Medina, 'Do not sit with them nor speak to them.' It was said: Abdullah ibn Ubayy came swearing that he would never be absent from them.
