Commentary
Those who slander. Its position can be either in the nominative or accusative as a form of blame. It may also be in the genitive case as a substitute for the pronoun in their secret conversations and whispers. It has been read: 'they slander', with the vowel on the letter 'lam'. The volunteers are the ones who volunteer and donate.
It has been narrated that the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, encouraged charity, so Abdur-Rahman ibn Awf brought forty uqiyyah of gold. It is said that he brought four thousand dirhams and said: I had eight thousand, so I lent my Lord four and kept four for my family. The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, said to him: May Allah bless you in what you have given and in what you have kept. [This was narrated by Ibn Marduwaih through the route of Ali ibn Abi Talhah from Ibn Abbas regarding the saying 'Those who slander the volunteers among the believers' - the verse. Abdur-Rahman ibn Awf came with forty uqiyyah of gold to the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, and a man from the Ansar came with a sa' of dates. Some hypocrites said: By Allah, Abdur-Rahman did not bring what he brought except for show, and indeed Allah and His Messenger are rich beyond this sa'. Through the route of Atiyyah al-Awfi. And Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, said: 'The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, went out one day to the people and called out to them: Gather your charities. The people gathered their charities. A man came with a sa' of dates. He said: O Messenger of Allah, I spent the night with a reward for the sake of Allah - the hadith. And Abdur-Rahman ibn Awf came and said: O Messenger of Allah, I have eight thousand, so four thousand for me and four thousand I lent to my Lord - and he mentioned it.' And Abdul-Razzaq in his Tafsir reported that Ma'mar informed us from Qatadah who said: Abdur-Rahman ibn Awf donated half of his wealth. He had eight thousand dinars and donated four thousand dinars. Some of the hypocrites said: Indeed, Abdur-Rahman is greatly showing off. So Allah, the Exalted, said: 'Those who slander the volunteers.' And a man from the Ansar had two sa's of dates. He came with one of them. The hypocrites said: Indeed, Allah is rich beyond this sa.'
So Allah, the Exalted, said: 'Except for their effort.' Al-Bazzar narrated from the narration of Umar ibn Abi Salamah from his father from Abu Hurairah who said: The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, said: 'Give charity, for I intend to send an expedition.' So Abdur-Rahman ibn Awf came and said: O Messenger of Allah, I have four thousand dirhams, two thousand I lend to my Lord and two thousand for my family - the hadith. In it: 'And a man from the Ansar spent the night and obtained two sa's of dates.' It was narrated by Talut ibn Abadah from Abu 'Awannah from him and Talut uniquely transmitted it, then he narrated it from Abu Kamil from Abu 'Awannah and through him Ibn Marduwaih. And in the Maghazi, it was mentioned as four thousand. And Asim ibn Adi donated a hundred wasqs of dates and threw them into the charity, and they laughed at him and said: Indeed, Allah is rich beyond the sa' of Abu 'Aqil.' The story of Abu 'Aqil was narrated by Ibrahim al-Harbi and al-Tabarani and al-Tabari from the narration of Khalid ibn Yasaar from Ibn Abu 'Aqil from his father who said: 'I spent the night with a reward for the sake of Allah on two sa's of dates - the hadith.' In its chain is Musa ibn Abadah who is weak. I said: The story of Abu 'Aqil was narrated by al-Bukhari from the hadith of Abu Mas'ud al-Ansari in brief, and in it: 'Another person came with more than that.' And in another narration: 'With something great.'
So may Allah bless him until Tamadur, his wife, was reconciled for a quarter of the price for eighty thousand, and Asim ibn Adi donated a hundred wasqs of dates, and Abu 'Aqil al-Ansari, may Allah be pleased with him, came with a sa' of dates and said: I spent the night with a reward for the sake of Allah on two sa's, so I left one sa for my family and came with a sa. The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, ordered him to scatter it among the charities, but the hypocrites slandered them and said: Abdur-Rahman and Asim gave only for show, and indeed Allah and His Messenger are rich beyond the sa' of Abu 'Aqil, but he loved to be remembered by himself to receive from the charities. So the verse was revealed: 'Except for their effort.' It was read with both the opening and the closing vowel. Allah mocked them, as in His saying: 'Allah mocks them' in that it is a statement, not a supplication. Do you not see His saying: 'And for them is a painful punishment.'
