Some of them are from others. This means denying that they are among the believers. It refutes their saying, 'And they swear by Allah that they are truly among you,' and confirms the saying, 'And they are not among you.' Then it describes them in a way that indicates their state is opposed to that of the believers. They command what is wrong, which is disbelief and sins, and they forbid what is right, which is faith and acts of obedience. They withhold their hands, being miserly with good deeds, charity, and spending in the way of Allah. They have forgotten Allah; they have neglected His remembrance, so He has forgotten them. He has left them from His mercy and grace. They are the disobedient, fully immersed in disobedience, which is rebellion in disbelief and detachment from all good. It is enough for a Muslim to be deterred by this disgraceful name that Allah has used to describe the hypocrites when He severely condemned them. When the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, disliked for a Muslim to say, 'I am lazy,' because the hypocrites were described as lazy in His saying, 'They are lazy.'

So what do you think of disobedience? They will remain in it, destined for eternity. This is sufficient evidence of the severity of its punishment, and that there is nothing more severe than it, and that it cannot be increased. We seek refuge with Allah from His wrath and punishment. Allah has cursed them and humiliated them with torment, making them blameworthy, associated with the accursed devils, just as He has honored the people of Paradise and associated them with the esteemed angels. They have a permanent punishment, and they have a type of punishment besides the fire, a permanent and everlasting punishment like the punishment of the fire. It may be intended that they have a punishment that remains with them in this world from which they do not detach, which is the suffering of hypocrisy, the outward appearance that contradicts the inward, out of fear of the Muslims and what they dread of exposure and the descent of punishment if their secrets are uncovered.
