Commentary
It is for you to please them. The address is to the Muslims. The hypocrites used to speak with slanders or refrain from jihad, then they would come to them and excuse themselves, confirming their excuses with oaths, so that they might be excused and be pleased with them. It was said to them: If you are believers as you claim, then the one who deserves to be pleased is Allah and His Messenger through obedience and agreement. The pronoun is singular because there is no difference between the pleasure of Allah and the pleasure of His Messenger, blessings and peace be upon him. They are considered as one in terms of being pleased, like saying: The kindness of Zaid and his generosity have delighted us, and his support has mended us. Or by Allah, He is more deserving to be pleased, and His Messenger is likewise.
