Commentary
"Grant me permission to sit and do not lead me into temptation nor cast me into temptation, which is sin, by not granting me permission. For if I remain behind without your permission, I would be sinful. It was said: And do not throw me into destruction, for if I go out with you, my wealth and family will perish. It was said: Al-Jad bin Qays said: The Ansar know that I am frivolous with women. So do not tempt me with the daughters of the yellow ones, meaning the women of the Romans. But I will assist you with wealth, so leave me be. And it was read: And do not tempt me, from 'to tempt him.' Indeed, they fell into temptation, meaning that the temptation is what they fell into, which is the temptation of remaining behind. In the Mushaf of Ubayy, may Allah be pleased with him, it is written: 'They fell,' because 'from' has a singular form but a plural meaning, 'surrounding the disbelievers,' meaning that it surrounds them on the Day of Resurrection. Or it is surrounding them now, because the causes of the surrounding are with them, as if they are in the midst of it."
