32They wish to blow out the Light of Allah with their mouths, and Allah rejects everything short of making His light perfect, no matter how the disbelievers may hate it. 33He is the One who has sent down His Messenger with guidance and the Faith of Truth, so that He makes it prevail over every faith, no matter how the Mushriks may hate it.

Commentary

Their condition in their attempt to nullify the prophethood of Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him, by denying it, is like that of one who wants to blow out a great light that is spread across the horizons. Allah intends to increase it and bring it to the utmost limit of brightness or illumination. He wants to extinguish it by his blowing and obscure it, to manifest it so that the Messenger, peace be upon him, appears over all religions and over all people of faith. Or to make the religion of truth prevail over every religion. If you say: How is it permissible? Allah does not will anything except this. And it is not said: I disliked or hated except Zaid. [Maqmud said: If you say how is it permissible, Allah does not will anything except this, and it is not said I disliked... etc. Ahmad said: And it is not said in this that refusal is the absence of will. Just as the affirmation is valid after the negation of will, it should also be valid after what is in its meaning absolutely. For we say that the presence of the negation particle has an effect in validating the coming of the affirmation particle afterwards, so this is not necessary. And Allah knows best.]? I say: The word 'refused' has been treated like 'did not will.' Do you not see how it was opposed to 'they want to extinguish' by His saying 'and Allah refuses'? And how He placed it in the context of 'and Allah does not will anything except that He completes His light.'
