Commentary
Among those who were given the Book is a clarification for those who are within its scope. He negated faith in Allah from them because the Jews are dualists and the Christians are trinitarians. And their faith in the Last Day is because they are in disagreement with what is required, and the prohibition of what Allah and His Messenger have prohibited, because they do not prohibit what is forbidden in the Book and the Sunnah. And from Abu Ruwq: they do not act upon what is in the Torah and the Gospel, and that they should adhere to the religion of truth, and believe in the religion of Islam which is the truth, while anything else is falsehood. It was said: the religion of Allah; it is said: so-and-so adheres to such-and-such if he takes it as his religion and belief. It is called jizyah because it is a portion that the people of dhimmah must pay, meaning they must fulfill it, or because they are recompensed with it for being granted exemption from killing. 'From a hand' may refer to the hand of the giver or the receiver.
