Commentary
It was recited: And they do not see, with the yā and the tā, they are tested with illness, drought, and other trials from Allah. Then they do not cease or repent from their hypocrisy, nor do they remember, nor do they reflect on their matter, or they are tested in jihad with the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, and they witness his matter and what Allah sends down to him of support and aid. Or the devil misleads them so they lie and break their covenants with the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, so he kills them and punishes them, yet they do not refrain. Some of them looked at each other, signaling with their eyes in denial of the revelation. [Mahamud said: 'Its meaning is that they signaled with their eyes in denial of the revelation... etc.' Ahmad said: 'It can mean supplication as he explained. It can also mean news that Allah turned their hearts, meaning He prevented them from receiving the truth with acceptance. However, al-Zamakhshari avoids making it news because turning hearts away from the truth is not permissible for Allah, glorified and exalted is He, based on the principle of goodness and what is best. He continues to interpret the apparent meaning if that is required, as he has done in His saying: Allah has sealed their hearts. So when this verse could mean both supplication and news equally, it is determined for him to make it supplication. Then in this supplication, there is a connection to the action that resulted from them, which is turning away, like His saying: And the Jews said: The hand of Allah is chained. Their hands have been chained. And His saying: And they wait for you to befall you the cycles of misfortune; upon them is the cycle of misfortune.]] And they mocked him, saying: 'Can anyone see you from among the Muslims so we may turn away? For we cannot endure listening to him and laughter overcomes us, so we fear being exposed among them.' Or they conspired, consulting about planning to leave and slip away, saying: 'Can anyone see you from anyone?' And it was said: Its meaning is that when a surah was revealed criticizing the hypocrites, Allah turned their hearts, supplicating against them with humiliation and turning their hearts away from what is in the hearts of the believers of ease, because they are a people who do not understand and do not reflect until they understand.
