Commentary
So among them are those who say, 'Which of you has had this surah increase him in faith?' This is denial and mockery of the believers and their belief that an increase in faith comes from the increase in knowledge gained through revelation and acting upon it.
'And which of you' is raised as an introductory phrase. And Ubaid bin Umayr read: 'Which of you' with a fatha, implying an action that is explained by 'has increased him.' Its meaning is: 'Which of you has had this increase in faith?' For it has increased them in faith because it is more certain and steadfast, and it brings comfort to the heart. Or it has increased them in action, for an increase in action is an increase in faith, because faith encompasses both belief and action. 'And it has increased them in wickedness to their wickedness' is a compounded disbelief added to their disbelief, for whenever they renew their disbelief and hypocrisy with the renewal of Allah's revelation, their disbelief increases, becomes more entrenched, and their punishment multiplies.
