Commentary
It was recited as 'Marjun' and 'Murja'un' from 'Arja'tuhu.' And 'Arja'tuhu' means: if I delayed him. From it comes the term 'Al-Murji'ah,' meaning:
And others among the ones who stayed behind, their matter is suspended, either He will punish them if they remain persistent and do not repent, or He will accept their repentance if they repent. They are three: Ka'b ibn Malik, Hilal ibn Umayyah, and Murarah ibn al-Rabi'.
The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, commanded his companions not to greet them or speak to them, and they did not do as Abu Lubabah and his companions did by tying themselves to the pillars and showing distress and sorrow. When they realized that no one was looking at them, they entrusted their matter to Allah, glorified and exalted is He, and they purified their intentions, and their repentance was sincere. So Allah had mercy on them. [[I did not find it in this context. The story is in the two Sahihs from the hadith of Ka'b ibn Malik: it is the hadith of Ibn Abbas that preceded it in brief.]] And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise. And in the reading of Abdullah: Forgiving, Merciful. And 'either for the servants' means they feared for them [[The phrase 'and either for the servants means they feared for them' is from the wording of Al-Nasafi: and either is doubt which refers back to the servants. (A)]] the punishment, and they hoped for mercy for them.
