Commentary
The foremost ones among the emigrants are those who prayed towards the two qiblahs. It is said that they are those who witnessed Badr.
And from Al-Sha'bi: Whoever pledged allegiance at Hudaybiyyah, which is the Pledge of Ridwan, is among the emigrants between the two migrations, and among the Ansar are the people of the first pledge of Aqabah, who were seven men, and the people of the second pledge, who were seventy, and those who believed when Abu Zararah, Mus'ab ibn 'Umayr, came to them and taught them the Qur'an. And Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, read: 'and the Ansar' in the nominative case, as an addition to the foremost ones. [I did not see it like this.]
And from Umar, he used to think that the saying 'and those who followed them with good' without the conjunction is a description of the Ansar, until Zayd said to him: 'It is with the conjunction.' He said: 'Bring me Ubayy.' He said: 'The confirmation of that is in the beginning of Al-Jumu'ah and in the middle of Al-Hashr and in the last of Al-Anfal and 'those who believed afterward.' And it was narrated that he heard a man reading it with the conjunction, so he said: 'Who taught you?' He said: 'Ubayy.' So he called him and said:
'He taught it to me from the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, and you sell the dates in Al-Baqi.' He said: 'You have spoken the truth, and if you wish, I can say: We witnessed and you were absent, we aided and you forsook, we sheltered and you expelled.' [I did not see it like this, and in Al-Tabari from the narration of Abu Ma'shar from Muhammad ibn Ka'b, it is said: 'Umar ibn Al-Khattab passed by a man reading: 'And the foremost ones among the emigrants and the Ansar,' so Umar took his hand and said: 'Who taught you this?' He said: 'Ubayy ibn Ka'b,' so he said:]
And from then on, Umar said: 'I used to see that we have been raised to a status that no one will reach after us, and the foremost ones have been elevated at the beginning, and his news, may Allah be pleased with them, means: He is pleased with them for their deeds, and they are pleased with Him for the bounties He has bestowed upon them, both religious and worldly. And in the Mushafs of the people of Mecca: 'flowing beneath them,' and this is the reading of Ibn Kathir, and in the other Mushafs: 'beneath them,' without 'from.'
