Commentary
Indeed, they, meaning the people of Mecca, are plotting to nullify the command of Allah and extinguish the light of truth. And I confront them with my plotting: by luring them and waiting for them at the appointed time that I have set for victory over them. So give respite to the disbelievers, meaning do not hasten their destruction and do not rush it. Give them a little respite, meaning a slight delay. And he repeated and varied between the two expressions for the sake of increased calmness and patience.
From the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him: 'Whoever recites Surah Al-Tariq, Allah will grant him ten good deeds for every star in the sky.' [Narrated by Al-Wahidi, Al-Thalabi, and Ibn Mardawayh with the chain to Abu bin Ka'b.]
