Commentary
Meccan, and its verses are 22 [revealed after Ash-Shams]. 'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful'.
They are the twelve constellations, and they are the palaces of the sky by comparison. It is said: the constellations are the stars that are the stations of the moon. It is said: the great bodies of the planets. They are called constellations due to their visibility. It is said: the gates of the sky and the promised day, the Day of Resurrection, and a witness and that which is witnessed, meaning a witness on that day and that which is witnessed therein.
The intended meaning of the witness is: those who witness it from all the creatures, and of the witnessed is: what is in that day of its wonders.
And the way of their indefiniteness is: either what I mentioned in His saying, 'A soul knows what it has brought forth,' as if it were said: and how abundant it is in witness and witnessed. Or it is the ambiguity in description, as if it were said: and a witness that is witnessed, whose description cannot be comprehended. The sayings of the interpreters regarding them have varied. It is said: the witness and the witnessed are Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him, and the Day of Resurrection. It is said: Jesus and his nation, due to His saying, 'And I was a witness over them as long as I was among them.' It is said: the nation of Muhammad and all other nations. It is said: the Day of Tarwiyah and the Day of Arafah. It is said: the Day of Arafah and the Day of Friday.
It is said: the Black Stone and the pilgrims. It is said: the days and nights, and the children of Adam. And from Al-Hasan: there is no day except that it calls out: 'I am a new day, and I am a witness over what is done in me, so take advantage of it, for if my sun sets, it will not reach me until the Day of Resurrection.' It is said: the guardians and the children of Adam. It is said: the prophets and Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him.
