Commentary
And it is permissible that by 'those who were tested' he means the companions of the trench specifically, and by 'those who believed' he means those thrown into the trench. The meaning of 'they tested them' is that they tortured them with fire and burned them. So for them in the Hereafter is the punishment of Hell due to their disbelief, and for them is the punishment of the burning, which is another great fire that expands just as the burning expands by burning the believers. Or they have the punishment of Hell in the Hereafter, and they have the punishment of the burning in this world, as it has been narrated that the fire turned against them and burned them. And it is permissible that he means 'those who tested the believers,' meaning they harmed them in general, and 'the believers' refers to those who were tested. And that for the testers there are two punishments in the Hereafter: for their disbelief, and for their testing.
