Commentary
Killed is man, a call upon him, and it is one of their most heinous calls. Mahmoud said: "A call upon him, and it is one of their most heinous calls..." Ahmad said: "I have never seen a servant dispute with his Lord like today. Allah, the Exalted, says: 'Then We split,' so he attributes the act to His essence truly, just as He attributed the rest of His actions from His saying: 'From a drop of fluid, He created him and determined him.' Al-Zamakhshari makes the attribution metaphorical, as in attributing the action to its cause. He makes the attribution of the act to Allah, the Exalted, analogous to the attribution of the splitting to the farmer, for he is the cause. The Qadari killed him; how ungrateful he is by one saying, and how misguided by another. If he makes the splitting of the earth truly attributed to the farmer, and to Allah metaphorically, what prevents him from making the farmer the one who poured the water and caused the grain to grow, and the stalk and the blade: truly, and are they not one? This is because killing is the utmost of the hardships and horrors of this world. And how ungrateful he is, a wonder. His saying: 'A wonder at his excess' may mean: a wonder. From his excess in denying the blessings of Allah, and you do not see a style harsher than it. Nor a rougher touch, nor a clearer indication of wrath, nor a further distance in blame, with the closeness of its ends, nor a more comprehensive statement for the imams on the brevity of its text. Then he began to describe his state from the beginning of his occurrence, until it ended, and what he is immersed in from the roots of blessings and their branches, and what he has buried his head in of denial and disdain, and little attention to what he is turning in and to what is required of him in performing gratitude. From what is he created? From anything insignificant, humiliating is his creation. Then he clarified that thing by saying: 'From a drop of fluid, He created him and determined him.' So He prepared him for what is suitable for him and specific to him. Similar to His saying: 'And He created everything and determined it with determination.' He set the path by implying 'He made easy' and explained it by ease, and the meaning is: then He made his path easy, which is his exit from his mother's womb. Or the path he chooses to walk from the two ways of good and evil by His ability and enabling him, as His saying: 'Indeed, We have guided him to the path.' And from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, he said: 'He made clear to him the path of good and evil.' So he buried him, making him one with a grave to honor him, and did not leave him cast upon the surface of the earth as prey for beasts and birds like other animals. It is said: 'The grave of the dead' when he buries him. And 'He buried him' when he commanded him to be buried and enabled him to do so. And from it is the saying of one who said to Al-Hajjaj: 'Bury us, Salih.' He raised him, creating him the other creation. And it was recited: 'He raised him.' No! A deterrent for man from what he is upon, when he has not yet fulfilled what he was commanded by Allah until he leaves all His commands, meaning: that a man has never been free from deficiency at all.
