Commentary
And those who disbelieve, some of them are allies of others. Its apparent meaning is the affirmation of the alliance among them, like His saying, 'Those are allies of one another' regarding the Muslims. Its meaning is: He has forbidden the Muslims from allying with those who disbelieve, inheriting from them, and has made it obligatory to distance themselves from them and sever ties with them, even if they are relatives. They should not inherit from one another. Then He said: 'Unless you do [this],' meaning unless you do what I have commanded you regarding the connection among Muslims and the alliance of one another, even in inheritance, favoring the bond of Islam over the bond of kinship, and that you do not sever ties between yourselves and the disbelievers. And you do not make their kinship like any kinship that brings about fitnah in the land and great corruption. Because as long as the Muslims do not become united against polytheism, polytheism will be apparent and corruption will increase. And it has been read frequently with a thaa.
