Commentary
Those who emigrated: that is, they left their homelands and their people out of love for Allah and His Messenger: they are the emigrants. And those who welcomed them into their homes and supported them against their enemies: they are the supporters. Some of them are allies of one another, meaning they support one another in inheritance. The emigrants and the supporters used to inherit from each other based on emigration and support, without regard to relatives, until this was abrogated by His saying, 'And those of blood relations are more deserving of one another.' It has been read: from their alliance, with a فتح and a كسر, meaning from their support in inheritance. The reason for the كسر is that the support of one another is likened to work and industry, as if by supporting his companion, he engages in a matter and undertakes a task. 'So it is obligatory upon you to support them' means it is obligatory for you to help them against the polytheists, except against a people among you and them with whom there is a covenant, for it is not permissible for you to support them against them, as they do not initiate fighting, since the covenant prevents that.
