Incitement: exaggeration in urging towards a matter from [harrad], which means that illness exhausts him and he exaggerates in it until he is close to death, or that you call him [harrad]: and you say to him: I see you as nothing but [harrad] in this matter and ailing in it, to provoke him and stir him. It is said: he stirred him, incited him, urged him, and excited him, meaning the same, and it was read [hirs], with the [sad] not being dotted, as narrated by al-Akhfash, from [haras]. And this is a promise from Allah and a glad tidings that the group of believers, if they are patient, will overcome ten times their number of disbelievers by the help of Allah, the Exalted and Mighty. Then He said: because they are a people who do not understand, meaning because the disbelievers are ignorant people who fight without reckoning and seeking reward like animals, so their steadfastness decreases and they lack the knowledge of Allah's support and deserve His abandonment, unlike those who fight with insight and have what warrants victory and manifestation from Allah, the Exalted. And from Ibn Jurayj, it was said that they should not flee and that one of them should stand firm against ten. The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, sent Hamzah, may Allah be pleased with him, with thirty riders, and he encountered Abu Jahl with three hundred riders. It was said: then it became heavy upon them and they were distressed by it, and that was after a long period, so it was abrogated and eased for them to resist one against two. It was said: there was a small number at the beginning, then when they increased, the easing was revealed. And it was read: [da'fan], with an opening and a closing, like [mukath] and [mukath], and [faqr] and [faqr]. And [da'fan] is the plural of [da'if]. And the verb attributed to the hundred was read with [ta] and [ya] in both places, and the intended weakness is the weakness in the body. It was said: in insight and steadfastness in religion, and they were varying in that. If you say: why was the same meaning repeated, which is the resistance of the group to more than it, twice before and after the easing? I say: to indicate that the situation with few and many is the same and does not differ, because the situation may vary between resisting twenty to two hundred and one hundred to a thousand, just as it is between resisting one hundred to two hundred and a thousand to two thousand.
