And if you fear from a people with whom you have a treaty treachery and breaking of it by signs that appear to you, then declare to them the treaty, casting it aside equally on a straight path intended. This is so that you show them the declaration of the treaty and inform them clearly and openly that you have severed what is between you and them. Do not engage them in war while they are under the impression that the treaty remains, for that would be treachery from you. Indeed, Allah does not love the treacherous. So do not conceal the breaking of the treaty and deception. It is said: 'on an equal footing' in knowledge of the breaking of the treaty. It is said 'on an equal footing' in enmity. The preposition and the noun in the genitive case are in the position of an adverbial phrase, as if it were said: 'Then declare to them firmly on a straight path intended,' or 'having attained an equal footing in knowledge or enmity,' as it is a condition of both the declarer and the one to whom it is declared.
