Commentary
It is said that it was revealed regarding those who provided food on the day of Badr. Each one of them would feed ten camels every day. It is also said that they said to everyone who had trade in the caravan: 'Assist with this wealth in the war against Muhammad, perhaps we can avenge what was inflicted upon us at Badr.' It is further said that it was revealed concerning Abu Sufyan, who had hired two thousand of the Ahabeesh for the day of Uhud, in addition to those he called upon from the Arabs, and he spent forty uqiyah on them. An uqiyah is forty-two mithqal. Their aim in spending was to obstruct the path of Allah, meaning their intention in spending was to prevent following Muhammad, which is the path of Allah, even if they did not see it that way. Then it will be a regret for them, meaning the outcome of their spending will be remorse and sorrow. It is as if its essence becomes regret and turns into sorrow. Then they will ultimately be defeated, even though the war between them and the believers was back and forth before that, and they will return as free men. Allah has decreed: 'I will certainly prevail, I and My messengers.' And those who disbelieved will be gathered to Hell, because among them are those who embraced Islam and their Islam was good, so that Allah may distinguish the wicked from the believers. He makes the wicked group some of them over others, and He gathers them all together, which is an expression of gathering and joining, until they pile up, as His saying: 'They were almost overwhelming him in a mass,' meaning due to their extreme crowding. Those are an indication of the wicked group. It is said that He distinguishes the wicked wealth that the polytheists spent in enmity against the Messenger of Allah, from the good wealth that the Muslims spent, like Abu Bakr and Uthman, in supporting him. He piles it up and places it in Hell among what they are punished with, as His saying: 'Their foreheads and sides will be branded with it...' The 'lam' in this context is related to His saying: 'Then it will be a regret for them,' and in the first case, it is related to 'they will be gathered.' And 'those' refers to those who disbelieved. It has also been recited: 'to distinguish' in a lighter form.
