Commentary
When Allah opened [victory] for him, he remembered the plot of Quraysh against him when he was in Mecca. This was to thank Allah, the Exalted, for saving him from their plot and for what Allah granted him of a good outcome. The meaning is: And remember when they plotted against you. This is because when the Ansar accepted Islam and pledged allegiance to him, Quraysh feared that his matter would become serious. They gathered in Dar al-Nadwa to consult about him. Then, Iblis entered upon them in the form of an old man and said: I am an old man from Najd. I am not from Tihama. I entered Mecca and heard about your gathering, so I wanted to attend you, and you will not lack my opinion and advice. Abu al-Bakhtari said: My opinion is that you imprison him in a house, bind him, and block his door except for a small opening through which you can give him food and drink, and wait for the unexpected to befall him. Iblis said: What a bad opinion! Someone from his people will come to fight you and rescue him from your hands. Then, Hisham ibn Amr said: My opinion is to put him on a camel and expel him from among you, so that what he has done will not harm you, and you will be at ease. Iblis said: What a bad opinion! It will corrupt a people other than you and they will fight you with him. Then Abu Jahl said: I see that you take a young man from each tribe and give him a sharp sword, so they strike him a blow as one man, and his blood will be scattered among the tribes. The Banu Hashim will not be able to wage war against all of Quraysh. If they seek blood money, we will give it. The old man - may Allah curse him - said: This young man has spoken the truth; he is the best of you in opinion.
So they dispersed on Abu Jahl's opinion, united in their intention to kill him. Gabriel, peace be upon him, informed the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, and commanded him not to sleep in his bed. Allah permitted him to migrate, so he ordered Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, to sleep in his bed and said to him: Cover yourself with my cloak, for no harm will come to you from what you dislike. They spent the night lying in wait. When morning came, they rushed to his bed and saw Ali, and they were astonished. Allah, the Exalted, frustrated their plot, and they followed his trail but Allah nullified their scheme.
[The story was narrated by Ibn Ishaq in Al-Maghazi: He informed me from someone who heard from Ibn Abi Najih from Mujahid from Ibn Abbas who said: When Quraysh gathered in Dar al-Nadwa and consulted about the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, Iblis obstructed them in the form of an old man, and he mentioned it at length. It was narrated by Al-Tabari and Abu Na'im in Al-Dala'il through Ibn Ishaq from Ibn Abi Najih. It does not mention at the beginning that this was due to the Ansar. Abdul Razzaq narrated: We were informed by Ma'mar from Al-Zuhri from Urwah who said: When the Muslims increased - and he mentioned its meaning. Al-Waqidi connected it from Ma'mar mentioning Aisha. And from Ibn Abi Khaythamah from Dawood ibn Husayn from Ikrimah from Ibn Abbas similarly.] To restrain you, to imprison you, or to severely wound you with blows and injuries, from their saying: They struck him until they restrained him, with no movement left in him, and so-and-so is restrained by pain. It was read: to restrain you, with emphasis. Al-Nakha'i read: to make you spend the night, from bayat, and from Ibn Abbas: to bind you, which is evidence for those who interpreted it as binding. And they plot against you and conceal their schemes against you. And Allah plots and conceals what He has prepared for them until it comes to them suddenly. And Allah is the best of planners, meaning His plotting is more effective than the plotting of others and has a greater impact, or because He does not decree except what is true and just and does not afflict except with what is deserved.
