Commentary
If you seek victory, then the victory has come to you. This is a speech directed at the people of Mecca in a mocking manner. This is because when they wanted to flee, they clung to the curtains of the Kaaba and said: O Allah, support our allies for the guest, and connect us to kinship, and free us from the captives. If Muhammad is on the truth, then support him, and if we are on the truth, then support us. It has been narrated that they said: O Allah, support the highest of the two armies, and guide the better of the two factions, and honor the two parties. It has been narrated that Abu Jahl said on the day of Badr: O Allah, which of us is more foolish and more severing of kinship, then let him be defeated today, meaning let him be destroyed. It is said: If you seek victory, it is a speech for the believers, and if you cease, it is a speech for the disbelievers. This means: And if you cease from enmity towards the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, it is better for you and more peaceful. And if you return to fighting him, we will return to supporting him against you. And that Allah is read with the opening (fath) as: And because Allah is a helper to the believers, this was the case. It is also read with the kasra (khar), and these are the two ways. This is supported by the reading of Ibn Mas'ud: And Allah is with the believers. And it is read: And it will not avail you, with the ya (ya) for separation.
