Commentary
It was a time appointed that was determined by Allah's decree and judgment, a limit by which the world is measured and ends, or a limit for the creatures to which they will come on the Day the trumpet is blown, as a replacement for the Day of Judgment, or as an explanatory addition. Then you will come in groups from the graves to the standing place, each nation with its leader. It was said: different groups. And it was reported from Mu'adh, may Allah be pleased with him, that he asked the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, about it. He said: O Mu'adh, you have asked about a great matter. Then he lowered his eyes and said: Ten types of my nation will be gathered: some of them in the form of monkeys, some of them in the form of pigs, some of them turned upside down: their feet above their faces, dragging on them, some of them blind, some of them deaf and dumb, some of them chewing their tongues which hang down on their chests: pus flows from their mouths, causing disgust to the people gathered, some of them with their hands and feet cut off, some of them crucified on trunks of fire, some of them more foul-smelling than corpses, and some of them wearing long cloaks made of tar sticking to their skins. As for those in the form of monkeys, they are the gluttons of the people. And as for those in the form of pigs, they are the people of unlawful gain.
As for those turned upside down, they are the usurers. And as for the blind, they are those who are unjust in judgment. And as for the deaf and dumb, they are those who are proud of their deeds. And as for those who chew their tongues, they are the scholars and narrators whose words contradict their actions. And as for those whose hands and feet are cut off, they are those who harm their neighbors. And as for those crucified on trunks of fire, they are the informers to the rulers about the people. And as for those who are more foul-smelling than corpses, they are those who follow desires and pleasures and withheld the rights of Allah in their wealth. And as for those wearing the cloaks, they are the people of arrogance, pride, and vanity." [Narrated by Al-Thalabi and Ibn Mardawayh from the narration of Muhammad ibn Zuhair from Muhammad ibn Al-Hindi from Hanzalah Al-Dusi from his father from Al-Bara' ibn 'Azib from him in full.] And it was read: "and it was opened," with emphasis and without emphasis. The meaning is: the abundance of its opened doors for the descent of the angels, as if they were nothing but opened doors, as in His saying: "And We caused the earth to gush forth springs," as if all of it were springs gushing forth. And it was said: the doors are the paths and ways, meaning they will be scraped open and a place will be opened for them, becoming paths that nothing can block. So it was like a mirage, as in His saying: "So it became like scattered dust," meaning it becomes something like nothing, due to the dispersion of its parts and the scattering of its jewels.
