Commentary
So he neither believed nor prayed. This means the human in his saying: Does the human think that We will not gather his bones? Do you not see his saying: Does the human think that he will be left aimlessly? This is connected to his asking: When is the Day of Resurrection? That is: he does not believe in resurrection, so he neither believed in the Messenger and the Qur'an, nor did he pray. It may also mean: he did not believe in his wealth, meaning: he did not give it zakah. It is said that it was revealed about Abu Jahl, who struts arrogantly. Its root is 'yatamattā', meaning: he stretches out, because the arrogant person extends his steps. It is said that it is from 'al-matā', which is the back, because he twists it. In the hadith: 'When my nation walks with arrogance and serves the Persians and Romans, then their strength will be among them.' This was narrated by al-Tirmidhi, Ishaq, Ibn Abi Shaybah, Abu Ya'la, and Ibn Adi from the narration of Musa ibn Ubaidah from Abdullah ibn Dinar from Ibn Umar. Musa is weak. Al-Tirmidhi also narrated it, and al-Bazzar from Muhammad ibn Ismail from Abu Muawiyah from Yahya ibn Sa'id from Abdullah ibn Dinar similarly. Al-Tirmidhi said: It has no origin. The known hadith is from Musa ibn Ubaidah. Al-Bazzar said: We do not know anyone who followed Muhammad ibn Ismail except for Musa. There is disagreement about it regarding Yahya ibn Sa'id. Al-Hakim narrated it through Hamad ibn Salamah from him from Ubaid from Khawlah bint Qais. Al-Tabarani narrated it in al-Awsat from the narration of Ibn Lahi'ah from Imarah ibn Khuzaymah from Yahya ibn Bakhns, the freedman of al-Zubair, from Abu Hurairah. Al-Asbahani narrated it in al-Targhib from the route of Faraj ibn Fadalah from Yahya ibn Bakhns as a disconnected narration. This means: he lied about the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, and turned away from him and neglected him, then he went to his people strutting in pride because of that. Woe to you, meaning: woe to you, it is a curse upon him that he will face what he dislikes.
