Commentary
Among us are the righteous, among us are the virtuous and the pious, and among us are those below that. And among us are a people below that. The description is omitted, as in His saying: 'And there is none among us except that he has a known position.' They are those who are moderate in righteousness, not fully complete in it.
Or they meant the wicked. We were paths divided, indicating the mentioned division, meaning: we were people of differing and varied opinions. Or we were in differing conditions like the different paths. Or we were in different paths, as in His saying:
'Like the honey of the path of the fox.' [This witness has been explained in the second part, page 92, so refer to it if you wish, the corrector said.]
Or our paths were paths divided, by omitting the added term which is the paths and placing the pronoun that is added to it in its place, and 'qidda' is from 'qadd,' like a piece from 'qata.' And the paths were described as divided, indicating the meaning of fragmentation and separation.
