Al-bayat means staying overnight. It is said: he stayed overnight (bayatan). From it is His saying, 'So Our punishment came to them by night or while they were sleeping.' It may also mean to plan secretly, like peace meaning submission. It is said: he attacked the enemy by night, so it may be meant that Our punishment comes to them while they are staying overnight, or at the time of night, or in the night, or it could mean secretly planning, as if it were said: to make them spend the night with Our punishment. And 'duha' is in the accusative as an adverb. It is said: it came to us at dawn, and at midday, and 'duha'—originally—is the name for the light of the sun when it rises and becomes high. The 'fa' and 'wa' in 'So are they secure' and 'Or are they secure' are conjunctions that the hamzah of denial has entered upon. If you ask: what is the thing being conjoined? And why is the first one conjoined with 'fa' and the second with 'wa'? I say: the thing being conjoined is His saying, 'So We seized them suddenly' and His saying, 'And if only the people of the cities had believed.' It is an interruption between the conjoined and the thing it is conjoined to. It was conjoined with 'fa' because the meaning is: they acted and did, so We seized them suddenly. After that, are the people of the cities secure that Our punishment will come to them by night, and are they secure that Our punishment will come to them at dawn? And it is read: 'Or are they secure,' as a conjunction with 'or.' 'While they are playing' means they are busy with what does not benefit them as if they are playing.
