Commentary
And the weighing on that Day is the truth, meaning the weighing of deeds and the distinction between their heavy and light ones. It is raised as a beginning. Its news is 'on that Day.' And 'the truth' is its description, meaning: and the weighing on the Day when Allah will question the nations. This is based on the understanding that 'on that Day' is related to the weighing, and 'the truth' is the news. However, according to what he said, the estimation is: and on the Day He questions, and it can be understood that his intention is: and the weighing will occur on the Day when Allah questions the nations and their messengers, meaning the true weighing, and it was closer to say: and the true weighing on the Day He questions... etc. And their messengers, the true weighing, meaning justice. And it has been read as 'the just.' There is a difference regarding the manner of weighing. It has been said: the records of deeds will be weighed with a scale that has a tongue and two pans, which the creatures will look at, confirming the argument, demonstrating fairness, and cutting off the pretense, just as He questions them about their deeds and they acknowledge them with their tongues, and their hands, feet, and skins testify against them. And the prophets, angels, and witnesses testify against them, just as it is established in their records and they read it in the standing of judgment. It has been said: it is a reference to the just judgment and fair ruling. So whoever's scales are heavy, meaning the deeds that have weight and value, which are the good deeds, or what their good deeds are weighed against. And from Al-Hasan: it is right for a scale in which good deeds are placed to be heavy. And it is right for a scale in which bad deeds are placed to be light. 'By Our signs they wrong themselves' means they deny them unjustly, as in His saying: 'So they wronged themselves by it.'
