Commentary
He covers the night with the day, seeking it eagerly. It has been recited with emphasis, meaning that the night follows the day, and the day follows the night; both are included. The evidence for the latter is the reading of Hamid ibn Qais: 'He covers the night with the day,' with the 'ya' opened and the night in the accusative and the day in the nominative, meaning that the day reaches the night and seeks it eagerly. This is well-suited to Hamid's reading, by His will and management. It is related to the 'subjugated' [UNTRANSLATED-LATIN: musakharat], meaning He created them to flow according to His wisdom and planning. Just as He intends to manage them, this is called a command by analogy, as if they are commanded to do so. It has also been recited: 'And the sun, the moon, and the stars are subjugated,' in the nominative. When it was mentioned that He created them subjugated by His command, it was said: 'Indeed, to Him belongs creation and command,' meaning He is the one who created all things, and He is the one who manages them according to His will.
