Commentary
So their claim was not what they called upon from their religion and what they adopted from their sect except their acknowledgment of its falsehood and corruption. And their saying, 'Indeed, we were wrongdoers in what we were upon.' It is permissible: so their seeking help was nothing but this saying of theirs, for there is no one to seek help from Allah except Him, and from their words, their calling: 'O Ka'b.' And it is permissible, so their calling upon their Lord was nothing but their acknowledgment, for they knew that the supplication does not benefit them, and that there is no time for supplication, so they do not increase beyond reproaching themselves and lamenting over what they had done. Their claim is a nominative subject for 'was,' and 'that they said' is a raised subject for it, and the opposite is permissible.
